文化涵化过程中的内疚、耻辱和心理亲近调查

We designed a scenario study to test our hypotheses. We recruited two groups of Chinese participants who were living in either China or Canada. Participants read a story about a manager who was facing a decision to compensate victims who were strangers for his or her wrongdoing. Participants were then instructed to indicate how much they would like to compensate, and their feeling of psychological proximity, shame and guilt toward the victims. Following that they answered demographic questions.

background to control for generational change in work and cultural values. One hundred and four undergraduate students from a medium size Chinese university and 98 undergraduate students from a medium size Canadian university participated in exchange for partial course credit. Participants from the Chinese university were ethnically Chinese born and raised in Mainland China. Participants from the Canadian university were either ethnically Chinese born and raised in Canada, or ethnically Chinese born in Mainland China, Hong Kong or Taiwan and had migrated to Canada six or more years ago. There were 60 females, 42 males and two failing to report gender in the Chinese in China group. Their mean age was 19.92 years (SD = 1.03). There were 51 females and 47 males, and the mean age was 20.71 years (SD = 2.11) in the Chinese in Canada group. The Chinese in China group was slightly younger than the Chinese in Canada group (t(199) = -3.42, p = 0.00), but the two groups were not different in the gender composition. While the minimum length of stay was six years, about 90 percent of our Canadian sample were either born in Canada or had lived in Canada for more than half of their lives (i.e. ten years or more), and had finished their primary school and high school there. Berry (1997) suggested education as a key factor of acculturation, as people learn new language, accept new ways of doing things, learn problem solving skills through new culturally specific approaches, and are socialized with new values when they study in a new culture. In general, the length of stay and education in the host country are important indicators of acculturation. Therefore we expect that the Chinese participants recruited in Canada were acculturated and had adopted some levels of Western cultural values since they had been educated in Canada for many years.
